Although we are based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, we do alot of work in Wales and Staffordshire, so please feel free to e-mail us any enquiries you have out of the area. We can often give a quote via e-mail if you provide us with a close-up photo of the window and a photo of access i.e to show how high the window is and if there is anything underneath it that may obstruct us from removing it. We also need approximate sizes (in inches or mm) and location, and any special requirements i.e. deadlines for the work to be done.

The difference between the two terminology are that in ‘Conservation’ , we aim to preserve all pieces of the original glass by using various techniques of ‘gluing’ the glass together, and in ‘Restoration’, usually any badly broken panes are replaced with newly painted ones.

Which method you decide to use depends on the value of the glass – not just in monetary terms, but also in historical importance and sentimental value.

All repairs in Conservation, however, are fully reversible and are are never seen as a permanent option. The benefit of this is that the original glass is always preserved for years to come.

Below is an example of a small pane which was conserved for a window at Oxon Church. The window itself, being made up of Victorian pressed glass, was in a very bad condition with numerous breaks and missing glass. Althought pressed glass was quite common in its day as being a cheaper alternative to traditional stained glass, they are now a rarity and are historically important to keep.

Pictures show the round pane in-situ, with a piece missing to the centre and numerous cracks, then the fully conserved pane after a new piece has been inserted (original piece was missing and therefore could not be used). Once the pieces are glued together, they are then ‘back-plated’ to provide support to the pane and to provide protection from the weather.

Public Buildings

Sometimes having a Contemporary design amongst the more traditional of buildings can have a stunning effect and many Church conversions and Victorian houses are following in these steps. It seems that the glorious architecture coupled with the striking and usually abstract ‘artwork’ of a Contemporary window complement each other to a high degree.

New Designs

Many houses have some form of stained glass or leaded light window. We can replace any existing plain glass with a beautiful stained glass panel to your taste or to match in with the period of your home, taking into consideration both light and privacy with our designs. We offer both a design service or are equally happy to make a panel based on your own design.

Renovations

Stained glass itself is a beautiful medium and one which is valued in homes both to the householder and to a potential purchaser. Many people, upon searching for a new home look at the costs involved and what work they may have to do. If you have a window or door panel that has seen better days then why not contact us with a view to obtaining a free estimate. Likewise, if you are moving and wish to take a panel with you, then we can arrange to remove the window and alter the dimensions to fit your new home (please be aware that you will need to specify in your sales details that you are doing this).

Here is an example of a window renovation we recently completed for a client. They weren’t happy with the painted centre panel and wanted it replaced with a design more suitable to the rest of the window and to the style of the house. We decided to alternate the border colours  as they felt like the top half and lower panels were separate, and then replaced the very dark glass with a colour to match with the lighter oblongs.
